In “Life of a King,” Cuba Gooding Jr. plays Eugene Brown, a man who is trying to start anew after 17 years in prison. After struggling to find a job, he lies about his background to land a janitor’s position at a high school in his old neighborhood. There he converts a detention room of teenagers into chess players. The main plot — an inspiring teacher instills a group of bad kids with the values of teamwork, self-respect and strategy — is so clichéd that much of the movie is likely to feel like a flashback to previously seen films. The scenes of Eugene’s confrontation with a neighborhood drug dealer are also overly familiar. Yet Mr. Gooding’s performance and his complex charisma are fascinating to watch throughout.
