NEW MOVIES THIS WEEK

*MYSTERY/SUSPENSE*   Two young orphans in the Tirolian Mountains come under siege by a vicious band of hunters in this nail-biter from first-time writer/director Marcus Blunder. Frightened of being separated by child services following the death of their mother, a self-sufficient 16-year-old girl (Sophie Lowe) and her 10-year-old brother (Maximilian Harnisch) - who hasn't spoken a word since seeing his father killed by the mayor (Peter Stormare) - strive to live off the land in peace. Their innocence is shattered, however, when a group of hunters led by the mayor's son brutalizes and rapes the free-spirited girl. Later, when a well-meaning social services worker arrives too late to protect the terrorized siblings, the girl and her brother prepare to take a stand against their ruthless attackers.

*MYSTERY/SUSPENSE*   After the gruesome death of his sister's husband, Michael Wolffsen (Tyler Mane - Rob Zombie's Halloween) returns home with his fiancee and his recently orphaned nephew to take care of his father Gary (Muse Watson). Gary has changed much since the last time Michael saw him: he's become extremely paranoid that a supernatural force is out to get him and is obsessed with making his home an unassailable compound. While Michael and his family initially believe that Gary is suffering from symptoms of dementia, they soon discover that Gary has a reason to be scared. Something truly evil is lurking outside the house and it won't stop until it kills off every last member of the Wolffsen family.

*ACTION/HORROR*   Eleven years after his parents were killed as Halley's Comet lit up the night sky, traumatized Chris (Fabian Wolfram) must fight to survive when another passing comet turns the tenants in his apartment building into rampaging mutants. Together with his trigger-happy neighbor (John Fallon), Chris races to escape the building and find sanctuary. Meanwhile, the world outside may already be gone.

*ACTION/ADVENTURE*   May Oster is a beautiful, pensive, somber woman in her mid-twenties; a beautiful woman that discovers her boyfriend's bloody scarf in her apartment following a black-out episode. This unearthed white scarf covered in crimson drives May to attempt suicide. May is taken to a psychiatric ward and is immediately thrown into seclusion. Detective James Harding questions May about a horrific murder, which thrusts May into narrating an in-depth story about an unnamed woman's involvement with unsavory characters leading to multiple murders.

*ACTION/THRILLER*  As a child, Ali Neuman narrowly escaped being murdered by Inkhata, a militant political party at war with Nelson Mandela's African National Congress. Only he and his mother survived the carnage of those years. But as with many survivors, the psychological scars remain. Today, Ali is chief of the homicide branch of the South African police in Cape Town. One of his staff is Brian Epkeen, a free-wheeling white officer whose family was originally involved in the establishment of apartheid but who works well with Neuman. Together they have to deal with crime that inevitably exists in sprawling areas of un- and under- employed people, crime exacerbated by gangs, both local and from other parts of Africa. Their job gets even more difficult when the corpses of two young women are found. A new evil has been introduced in the city and a new drug has been introduced to its residents, including both murder victims.

The summer intensifies as she confronts a growing emotional gulf between herself and her husband, much unsolicited advice from her prying girlfriend and the temptation of an old flame.

*MYSTERY/SUSPENSE*   In theaters 5/30/2014   An office worker is trapped inside the building where a killer is on the loose. Captain America's Joe Johnston heads into territory with this claustrophobic thriller surrounding a young lawyer (Max Minghella) who's life is in jeopardy when he becomes trapped in an office with a killer out to harm his company. Johnston directs from a script by Adam Mason and Simon Boyes.

*ACTION/ADVENTURE*   An ordinary scientist finds himself caught in a vicious cycle after harnessing the power of time travel in this sci-fi tale starring Lord of the Rings' Sean Astin and Snatch heavy Vinnie Jones. Mild mannered scientist Stuart Conway (Astin) has just made the discovery of the century. Deep within the confines of a secret military base, Conway has created the Slipstream device - a miniature time travel machine that allows him the ability to travel ten-minutes into the past at the push of a button. When Conway decides to use his new discovery to make a few illicit withdrawals from his local bank, the arrival of a violent group of bank robbers throws a serious wrench in his plan.

 *ACTION*   Borealis is a peek into the future, set in a globally warmed north. The year is 2045 and the ice caps have melted, enabling the discovery of the last oil and gas reserve on the planet are in the Canadian North. It's a future we have all seen coming for years. Borealis is the "gold rush" town that springs up to give ya anything you need. For a price.

*ACTION/THRILLER*   Eisenberg plays Simon, a timid, isolated man who's overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams (Wasikowska). The arrival of a new co-worker, James (also played by Eisenberg), serves to upset the balance. James is both Simon's exact physical double and his opposite - confident, charismatic and good with women. To Simon's horror, James slowly starts taking over his life.

*COMEDY*   A youthful marriage pact leads to romantic complications for two best friends in this upbeat love story starring Haylie Duff and Chris Soldevilla. Pondering their futures as they prepare to graduate from college, Mitch and Elizabeth pledge to marry one another in 10 years if they're still both single. A decade later, Mitch has yet to walk down the aisle. Lonely, he remembers the pack he made with Elizabeth, and sets out to find her. Upon arriving in her hometown unannounced, however, Mitch learns that Elizabeth has both a wedding date and a fiancée. Crestfallen, Mitch must now decide whether to fight for the woman he's never stopped loving, or trust that she has finally found the man of her dreams.
